It has been a busy time in the Oklahoma craft beer world.
In the past several weeks, we’ve had Tulsa Craft Beer Week, Oklahoma City Craft Beer Week and The Hop Jam beer and music festival. Now it’s time for a short break before Wild Brew, set for 5-8 p.m. Aug. 22 at Tulsa’s Cox Business Center.
Wild Brew is a fundraiser for the Sutton Avian Center in Bartlesville.
Plans for Wild Brew’s beer have been under way for a few weeks. Anthem Brewing Co. and Tulsa local homebrewers club the Fellowship of Ale Makers (FOAM) were busy brewing this year’s beer at the brewery in Oklahoma City.
The collaboration beer has gone back five years and is usually done at Choc Beer Co., but with the facility brewing so much beer for other breweries, Choc’s site in Krebs didn’t have the time available.
Anthem brewmaster Patrick Lively was asked if he could help with the collaboration beer. He said yes, and now the brewery known for its Belgian-style beers is on board.
“We’re really excited about the opportunity to brew the Wild Brew beer this year,” Lively said. “It was a great opportunity to work with and collaborate with the talented homebrewers of FOAM. This year’s recipe is a Belgian tripel. Because of some different restraints, we decided to not do something experimental, yet instead chose to make a very clean version of a classic style. The beer is 8.5 percent alcohol by volume, 20 IBUs and will be available in 750ml bottles as well as on draft at participating locations.”
FOAM President Jeff Pursley likes what the Wild Brew beer does for the club and its members.
“The committee wanted a strong beer this year, and they wanted it on the shelves sooner than previous years,” Pursley said. “Patrick and I decided to make a tripel. It is a strong Belgian style. It is unusual for strong beers in that it is usually served fresh, not long after brewing. That made it the perfect style for our situation this year. The FOAMers discussed it for a while on our website and concluded that tripel was the way to go this year. We proposed some recipes, and Patrick took it from there.
“The collaboration beer means a lot to FOAM. It gives us a chance every year to make a club trip to a brewery. We all like to see ‘our’ beer on store shelves and at the WildBrew festival.
And it promotes the club to craft beer consumers.”
It’s not too early to get the “early bird” discount — 10 percent off Wild Brew ticket prices. That offer will end June 5. Make plans today to attend the Wild Brew launch party at Leon’s, 3301 S. Peoria Ave., from 5-7 p.m. June 4 to try some of this beer.
